Sailor of the Year

Click here for a brief video clip

AMC-Select Juan Carrillo is our Sailor of the Year from NAF El Centro. He was treated in October to a Palm Springs Holiday with his wife, Judith. Their four beautiful children were cared for by an aunt in Indio, so Juan and Judith truly had a romantic getaway! I asked Juan how the SOY is chosen. Here's what he said (in his own words):

"In 1973 the US Navy started to recognize the outstanding Sailors of the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets and implemented the Sailor of the year award. Every year one Sailor of the Year from every squadron gets recognized for his outstanding performance throughout the year. To become Sailor of the Year, you have to be the number-one sailor in your command. The one that takes care of all junior sailors, the most motivated and the most dedicated. To be awarded Sailor of the Year is a great accomplishment since only one gets selected from hundreds of outstanding Sailors. After I got selected, I was awarded a Navy Commendation Medal and a Flight on an F/A-18C jet. It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to many of us, and it has been a great pleasure to be selected as Sailor of the Wing for 2009. I want to thank my wife, Judith, since she is the one that supports me in everything I do."

Congratulations and much success to the Carrillos. What an outstanding family!
